Arts and Politics of the African Disapora. We'll talk about a few art exhibits which are closing next week, such as Chukes at Sargent Johnson Gallery, and Double Exposure at MoAD. Both exhibits are in San Francisco. Sept. 5, is First Fridays in the Bay. There is another exhibit opening at AAMLO on Censorship. We'll also look at black theatre in the SF Bay: Tayo Aluko in Call Mr. Robeson. There is a fundraiser Sept. 5, and con't. Sept. 6-7 at 5 PM at the Phonenix Theatre; Richard Talavera, playwright, and director, Norman Gee's Before the Dream: the mysterious death (and life) of Richard Wright; Coleman Domingo, playwright of "A Boy and His Soul." We will also revisit the Gulf Region and see what's going on there on the ground in Louisiana and Mississippi. We are also honored to have the directors of the new film "Trouble the Water," which opens this weekend, Sept. 5 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Check your listings.

Today we will speak to Malik Rahim, co-founder of Common Ground Collective, and candidate for the Louisiana State Congress an Jordan Flathety, editor of LeftTurn Magazine. Jordan is the journalit who broke the Jena 6 story to the nation. Also in the studio Friday, Sept. 12, will be Jackie Sumell. She is the artist/activist who with Herman Wallace, Angola 3, is designing, now looking to build his dream house. She was on the air last week, on location from the Seventh Ward. Nina Pascall, playwright and actress, currently in performance with a new work, Along the Path of Larks and Swallows, The 2008 San Francisco Fringe Festival, at the Phoenix Theatre (at Geary), 6th Floor, in San Francisco. Her final peformances are Friday, Sept. 12, 10 PM and Saturday, Sept. 13, 8:30 PM. We will close with poetry from Tupac Amaru Shakur's collection: The Rose That Grew from Concrete, on the anniversary of his murder Sept. 13, 1996 (b. June 16, 1971). We'll look at black theatre. This will be followed by a short excerpt of an interview with Patrice Rushen last month. Ms. Rushen will be performing as a part of a salute to black women journalists, Sept. 13, 2 PM at the Oakland Museum, 1000 Oak Street, Oakland, CA. For tickets contact 1-877-EXP-THE-GREEN. The show opens with reflections by Camisha Fatimah, on the occasion of Imam Warith Dean Mohammed's passing Tuesday, Sept. 9, during the blessed month of Ramadan. Ashay! Black Art and Culture. The 51st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival kicks off this weekend: Sept.19-21; perhaps we can speak to a few artists making their debut this year and a veteran or two or at least feature a song. I'm not going this year, so folks will have to blog their reports, so I can share them on the air. From the archives debuts Wednesday, Sept. 17, 6 AM. I am featuring the interview with Patrice Rushen we weren't able to do justice Sept. 12. Tune in. If you miss a segment 'cause you're sleeping or otherwise occupied, listen later at the archives. Friday, we'll speak to actors from the play currently on stage, Yellow Jackets at Berkeley Rep. We'll also speak to Khalil Jacobs-Fantauzzi, candidate for Berkeley City Mayor, about Independence Day celebrations in Puerto Rico, Sept. 23. The first leader of an independent African nation, post-colonialism, Kwame Nkrumah's birthday is Sept. 20; we're going to try to connect with a couple of folks from Ghana to talk about his legacy then and now. Finally, if there is time, we'll talk to someone on the bill for the "Rise Up for Obama Fundraiser," 9/20 at Uptown Body, 401 26th Street, in Oakland, 6-10 PM. We also want to talk to someone from "Take a Stand: Sit for Change," 9/21, 12 noon to 5 PM at MLK Civic Center Park, 2151 MLK Jr. Way, in Berkeley. I'm going to try to get a poet on the air, Aya de Leon and Drew Dillinger are feature, along with Center for Urban Peace Spiritual Director, Rev. Angel Kyodo Williams. Mikey Ellinger and Scott Braley, (photographer/writer team) along with Eddie Abrams spoke about Allensworth on the eve of its 100 Anniversary. Allensworth is Baba Abrams' centerpiece for his annual "Peace Festival" is Allensworth, held in Oakland at Eastmont Town Center in Oakland, this year. It's going to be a busy morning. Of course we'll feature a few selections to get the thoughts and energy rolling in the right direction--center.
