Ulster County Sojourner Truth Traveling Stole

The Sojourner Truth Traveling Stole showed up in Poughkeepsie in time to get a few signatures there and then head over to Kingston where a new statue, Sojourner Truth: First Steps to Freedom by artist, Trina Greene, is mounted at City Hall through August. There is a lovely companion exhibit on the first floor also curated by Ms. Potter, Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs for Kingston. There has been controversy surrounding the art which has to do with inclusion and community involvement. The work was commissioned by SUNY New Paltz, completed in 2021, to live in front of the Sojourner Truth Library. Until 2024, the work was stored off site. This is the first time First Steps has been viewed by the public.
